Mozambique Information
For Mozambique travel information and other tips visit www.timeout.co.mz for details.

VISA
All foreign (non-RSA passport holders) visitors to Mozambique must have a visa. A visa can be obtained at any Mozambican consulate or embassy, with cost depending on the type required and the speed at which you require it. You will need to produce your passport (and a copy of your passport if this is your first application) plus two passport size photographs.

Malaria
Is prevalent in Mozambique and it is recommended that visitors to the country take anti-malarial prophylactics, especially those traveling outside Maputo. The best precaution is to avoid being bitten by using Mosquito nets and repellent spray and wearing protective clothing, especially in the evenings.

Water
Bottled drinking water may be purchased anywhere in Maputo and the larger cities. In rural areas it may be more difficult to obtain supplies of safe drinking water and we recommend that you boil and filter all water or carry a supply of water purification tablets.

The Law
The law requires you to carry identification at all times and you may be asked to produce your documents by the police. Rather than carry original documents, make a copy of your passport and other important documents and have them NOTARISED and store your original documents safely. Below are the addresses of some Notary offices in Maputo:

Av. Vladimir Lenine, 1472; tel. 428421
Rua Bagamoyo, 48; tel. 428422
Av. Samora Machel, 11; tel. 428417
Av Eduardo Mondlane, 2885; tel. 400578

Motorists - Drive on the Left. Always keep the following documents handy: Personal identification (Passport, visa or notarised copies of same)
Driving licence
Vehicle registration papers

Third party insurance certificate (obtainable at the border)
Temporary import permit (obtainable at the border and obligatory for trailers, boats and caravans)

Failure to produce identification documents when requested to do so by the police may result in a fine. The uniform of the Civil Police force is grey and that of the Transport Police is navy and white. The Transport Police may only stop you for traffic violations, the Civil Police usually ask to inspect your documents i.e. DIRE, Identity Card or Passport and valid visa. If you are stopped by the Police, remember that politeness and a little patience go a long way. The general speed limit in the city is 50kmph and outside the city, signs will notify you of the speed limit. It is illegal to drink and drive and it is advisable to drive only during daylight hours in rural areas.
Seat belts are mandatory and you must carry an emergency triangle. Fuel stations are plentiful in built up areas and along the main roads, however when you travel on secondary roads, it is wise to ensure that you have sufficient fuel to reach your destination. The accessibility by road of various provincial towns is dependent on seasonal weather conditions, so get as much information as possible on the routes you plan to use before departure.
